Model Overview
Under the bed can be:
- place to relax;
- bed for younger children;
- workplaces;
- training area;
- cabinets;
- play area and so on.
All of these models have differences. Their characteristics are given below.
With play area
Under the play area most often mean the space located under the bed. For the playing area of a boy up to 10-12 years old this place is enough. Some models provide for the location of the side shelves on which toys are placed. Not all models have them, but it is better to choose with the presence of shelves or to make them yourself.
In some designs, there is a slide for descent from the second tier. They occupy space, but are part of the playing area. Not all beds with a slide have a play area under the berth - for some models, the rest of the space is occupied by wardrobes and drawers.
With a mattress at a height of up to 120 cm above the floor, the presence of a play area will be inappropriate. Such structures often have a height of up to 1 m, and a child even of preschool age runs the risk of hitting his head. Attic with a play area is better to choose with a bed height above 160 cm from the floor.
With workplace
An attic bed with a working area can have different equipment:
- with pull-out tables;
- with retractable countertops;
- with the full organization of the workplace under the bed (this provides for shelves, space for a computer, and the bed itself is located at a height above 160 cm above floor level).
Such models are practical because they save space. Nevertheless, they have a number of significant drawbacks:
- lack of sunlight in the working area;
- the need for additional lighting;
- fixed tabletop height (for children, it is recommended to choose tables in which this height is regulated by raising the legs. Attic beds do not have this possibility. As the child grows, the table height will remain unchanged, which will negatively affect the child’s posture and condition of the spine).
With a place to relax
Beds with a place to stay are rare, especially for boys. Most often under the bed is a sofa. It can be folding. The sofa can act as a second and even third berth for younger children or for guests. Places for relaxation can be equipped with a sofa, mini-rack and a place for a small TV. Such designs are usually intended for adolescents living in the same room with their parents (if it is not possible to allocate a separate room for the child).
With wardrobe
Models of such structures with built-in cabinets are the most common. As a place for things can be installed:
- cabinets;
- drawers;
- shelves;
- cabinets with baskets for clothes;
- combinations of several or all of the above options.
These beds are truly functional. They save space. True, they are more suitable for children than for teenagers.
In order for the teenager’s closet to be full, the attic must be at least 1.6 - 1.8 m high. It is not always possible to install such beds, since the height from the mattress to the ceiling should be at least 80 cm, otherwise it will not even be possible to sit on the bed . For low or medium ceilings, it is not recommended to use such models. However, for boys under 10 years old, these beds are suitable.
What color scheme is suitable for the boy
Most often, when designing a room for boys, they use blue and green colors. It is best to use combinations of these colors and their shades, for example:
- light green and a little blue;
- blue combined with white;
- light green in combination with white;
- green in combination with blue and white;
- blue combined with brown and green;
- light green in many of its shades.
What colors are not recommended for a boy’s room:
- all shades of pink;
- red (dominant);
- Violet;
- lilac;
- orange (carrot).
Colors that are universal:
- yellow;
- beige;
- white combined with light brown;
- light green and its shades;
- woody;
- turquoise.

A bit about security
The attic bed for the boy should be equipped with safety rails, especially if the child is small. The railing should be located around the perimeter of the mattress. For children under 10 years old, a sloping staircase is recommended, adolescents and adult children can also cope with a straight staircase.
Before operation after installation, the bed should be checked by the parents for a fortress, especially if small children will sleep on it.
As can be seen from the information described in this article, depending on the age of the boys, an attic bed is selected if there is a need to save space in the room or a desire to make the child a comfortable atmosphere in a small area in the room. When choosing a bed, you should take into account the age and opinion of the child. Particular attention should be paid to security.
